My Legacy
In this class I learned many things; I chose 2 artifacts which were
themes of literature and midterm presentation. Learning about my given’s
immigrant culture was something new. I had no knowledge of Saudi Arabian
culture, beliefs, language; and through these past assignments I could learn and
relate to many things from this person and his culture. My immigrant had a hard
life moving to the United States and adapting to a new culture while trying to
keep his. He was constantly looked different because of his culture and the
stereotype many people had because he was Middle Eastern.
I learned a lot from the themes of literature and related to them through
my own culture and my immigrants culture. I also benefitted from other
classmates presentations and contributions in class. I understood others
perspective and also about their immigrant. I learned what other people thought
about culture and life circumstances and their reasons. I learned that sometimes
no matter the culture everyone can relate with something and learn from someone
else. I also exposed my life experience moving to this country in 2008 and how
it affected me and benefitted me. During the midterm presentations I worked with
Eva Garcia and although we were a small group it was somewhat easier to do the
work, we worked in the school library and discussed about the story Little
Things are Big, we learned how culture influences our lives and how Jesus Colon
had decided to never leave a person in need unattended due to stereotype or
popularity.
I encountered many challenges during this class, the amount of work every
week and time was hard to handle at the beginning, I wondered if I could make it
all the way. Somehow after a couple of weeks I started to understand how
everything worked and thanks to the end of class summary I could remember things
that were due that same week. I also enjoyed the class because every day was
something different and everyone participated which made it more interesting,
especially because I learned more by listening to to other peoples work and
experiences. Dr. Urbina was always available to help and provide feedback and
also encouraged us to provide our own feedback and others during presentations
which only made us learn from our “flaws”.
I enjoyed this semester and can truly say that I learned Immigrants
culture not only my assigned immigrants but many in class. I enjoyed the team
work and assignments, although they were hard to catch up sometimes I learned to
be more organized and participate more in class. This class made this semester a
short one and a fun one. Glad I had the chance to meet a great team and learn
from it at the same time.
